Ultra-Wide Band - A quick overview
Conventional wireless signals normally occupy bandwidths between several hundred KHz and tens of MHz. UWB sends and receives data at bandwidth of over 500MHz and at very low power spectral densities. The low power density levels of UWB and the high frequencies they use means signal travel is limited in distance but also means they do not interfere much with other waves. The power density levels of UWB are up to 100,000 times smaller than signals emitted by mobile phones.
A main application for UWB is location tracking. When determining locations using wireless signals the length of the signal pulse determines the accuracy IR-UWB uses very short pulses of about 1ns which allows it to measure distances with a high degree of accuracy.
